Chinese carmaker XPeng has rolled out its first mass-produced Robotaxi in its factory in Guangzhou, China.

XPeng officially rolled out its first mass-produced Robotaxi last 18 May. With this achievement, it is the first carmaker in China to develop and mass-produce a Robotaxi “through full-stack, in-house development.” This implies that the technologies used to develop the Robotaxi were completely developed within XPeng. 

The Robotaxi is production-ready and pre-assembled, equipped with four Turing AI chips and built on the XPENG GX platform. The Turing AI chips make upAccording to XPeng’s official press release, the vehicle is capable of level 4 autonomous driving. 

The roll-out comes four months after XPeng secured a road test permit earlier this year. By March, XPeng’s in-house Robotaxi unit was created to oversee the product’s market development. 

The Robotaxi’s pilot operations will begin this 2026, with human-less programs set to begin by 2027. 

“XPENG plans to initiate pilot Robotaxi operations in the second half of this year to validate technical viability, user acceptance, and the complete business model,” the company wrote. “The company aims to achieve fully autonomous operations without on-site safety officer by early 2027.” 

XPectations for 2027 

The year 2027 has a lot in store for XPeng. By next year, the automaker plans to produce flying cars and humanoid robots, President Brian Gu told Reuters. The company partnered with Volkswagen to produce its first EV model earlier this year, opening the company to even more collaborations in the future. 

“There are a lot of areas that we can partner and really ⁠provide value to each other,” he said.  “We need to be nimble and willing to partner with different players in different regions.”
