Car sales in Malaysia increased by 16.7 per cent year-on-year, marking its 2nd consecutive month of growth this year.

Data from the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) revealed that a total of 72,113 vehicles were sold in April 2026. This figure has improved by 13.6 per cent compared to March, marking two months of consecutive growth in Malaysia’s car market.
Year-to-date, Malaysia’s total sales figures for Q1 of 2026 reached 254,318 units, 1.63 per cent higher than the same period last year. Passenger YTD sales improved by a slight 2 per cent, while commercial YTD sales declined by 2 per cent. With a strong end to Q1, the MAA stated that it expects car sales to continue growing in May.

Total vehicle production improved by a staggering 25 per cent YoY. Passenger vehicle production came to 66,351 units in April, 25 per cent higher than the same month last year. Commercial vehicle production also increased by 26 per cent, bringing the total to 70,611 units for April.
For the entirety of Q1, total vehicle production amounted to 254,318, 2 per cent more than the same period last year.
According to the MAA, the growth in Malaysia’s total industry volume (TIV) can be attributed to new model launches and the re-opening of factories after the Hari Raya holiday period in March.
