Data released by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA) revealed that its members sold just short of 20,000 vehicles in February.
General overview
Vietnam’s car market initially started the new year with strong sales in January but suddenly stalled the following month. Collectively, VAMA members sold 19,278 vehicles in February 2026, down 48 per cent compared to the previous month and 10.8 per cent year-on-year (YoY). This sudden stall can be attributed fewer working days due to the Lunar New Year holiday period, which lasted for five days in February.
The breakdown of VAMA members’ overall sales is as follows:
- 12,376 or 64 per cent passenger vehicles
- 6,542 or 34 per cent commercial vehicles
- 360 or 2 per cent special purpose vehicles (SPV)
Completely knocked down (CKD) comprised 48 per cent of total sales with 9,220 units sold, down 49 per cent from January. Similarly, sales of completely built-up (CBU) or imported vehicles also declined by 47 per cent, at 10,058 units sold. Combined with data from January, these figures reveal that Vietnamese consumers are regaining their preference for imported vehicles.
Despite the February slowdown, strong sales in January lifted Vietnam’s year-to-date tally to 46,153 units, up 49 per cent YoY.
