Australia’s used car market declined by 4.3 per cent decline in February, with 213,856 vehicles sold during the month.

The latest Automotive Insights Report from the Australian Automotive Dealer Association and AutoGrab shows sales eased from January’s strong rebound as ongoing supply constraints continued to weigh on the market.

Listings decline amid supply pressures

Active used vehicle listings also fell in February, dropping 6.9 per cent month-on-month to 321,602 vehicles. The decline highlights ongoing supply pressures across the used vehicle market.

James Voortman said the market remained relatively stable despite the monthly decline in sales.

“Sales have remained solid following January’s lift, and while the days to sell eased slightly for the first time since September 2025, consumers are still taking their time when making purchasing decisions,” Voortman said.

“It’s a more rational market than the peak periods we saw in recent years and speaks to the economic tensions Australia is facing.”

Time to sell improves slightly

The report found the average time taken to sell a used vehicle fell slightly to 46.6 days in February, reversing the gradual increase recorded since September 2025.

The Ford Ranger remained Australia’s best-selling used vehicle during the month.

Report expands market coverage

The February edition of the report also introduced several updates to improve data accuracy.

These include expanding vehicle coverage to include cars up to 20 years old, incorporating demonstration vehicles into the reporting dataset, and improving the classification of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to better distinguish them from conventional hybrids.

According to the AADA, the changes provide a more comprehensive view of the used vehicle market and better reflect the composition of Australia’s national vehicle fleet.
