Malaysian car sales rose by 30 per cent in October compared to September.

According to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), 75,592 new cars were delivered in October alone, bringing the year-to-date figure to 655,328 units sold.

OVERVIEW

Out of nearly 76,000 vehicles sold, majority of this figure is attributed to passenger car sales with 70,321 units sold. Commercial vehicle sales comprise only a small percentage of overall sales with 5,671 units sold in October. Passenger car sales increased slightly by 6.4 per cent year-on-year (YoY) while commercial vehicle sales increased by 1.8 per cent. Overall, vehicle sales increased by 6 per cent YoY.

Year-to-date (YTD) figures amounted to a total of 655,328 units sold, just 2 per cent less compared to the same period last year.

In terms of production, Malaysia produced 61,192 passenger vehicles last month, a 9 per cent decline YoY. Commercial vehicles also decreased YoY by 6 per cent, with only 4,034 units produced in October. Malaysia’s total number of vehicles produced in October reached 65,226 units, a 9 per cent drop from last year.

In terms of YTD figures, production decreased by 7 per cent. The number of vehicles produced from January to October this year reached 617,335 units.

SURGE IN SALES

According to the MAA, the rise in sales can be attributed to consumers taking advantage of tax exemptions for completely built-up (CBU) electric vehicles (EV). The “duty-free holiday” is set to end this year, with no mention of extension in Malaysia’s Budget 2026 announcement. These tax exemptions were initially announced in 2022 and have been extended three times since 2023.

Auto brands are affected by this change as well, with many increasing promotional efforts and encouraging customers to purchase vehicles before the year ends.

For the same reasons, the MAA anticipates sales to rise this November until the end of the year.
