The Polestar 3, Volkswagen Tiguan, Volkswagen Multivan, and Audi A5 have achieved a five-star safety rating from ANCAP.

These vehicles, ranging from electric SUVs to large sedans and people movers, showed strong safety performance across all four ANCAP testing areas including Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, Vulnerable Road User Protection, and Safety Assist.

ANCAP assessed the Polestar 3, Volkswagen Tiguan and Audi A5 using its latest rating system. The Volkswagen Multivan was tested using the 2020–2022 criteria.

Polestar 3 Stands Out for Child Safety

The all-electric Polestar 3 delivered outstanding results in Child Occupant Protection, scoring 94 per cent. This is the second-highest score ANCAP has recorded. It received full marks for its child presence detection system, which alerts the driver if a child is left alone in the car.

It also scored 90 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection thanks to strong crash test results. The vehicle includes active safety features like reverse autonomous emergency braking, designed to prevent accidents at low speeds.

The model features an active bonnet that lifts during a crash to protect pedestrians. While it showed good protection over most of the bonnet, ANCAP noted poor results near the windscreen pillars and front edge.

“Polestar delivers a stand-out for child occupant protection – both in its crash impact protection and proactive features like its direct child presence detection system,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer Carla Hoorweg.

Volkswagen Tiguan Offers Balanced Safety

The new Volkswagen Tiguan also earned five stars, with consistent scores across all areas: 83 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection, 88 per cent for Child Occupant Protection, 84 per cent for Vulnerable Road Users, and 84 per cent for Safety Assist.

In crash tests, it protected both driver and passenger well, though ANCAP flagged a minor issue with “submarining”, where the seatbelt slips off the pelvis, in one test.

“The Tiguan blends a solid crash structure with a well-rounded active safety offering – making it a dependable and practical choice for the safety-conscious family,” said Ms Hoorweg.

Audi A5 Delivers Strong Results in Key Areas

The Audi A5 sedan scored 87% for both Adult and Child Occupant Protection. It performed well in crash tests, with only minor concerns for the driver’s chest in certain impacts. The vehicle also includes a child presence detection system, though not as advanced as the one in the Polestar 3.

Its collision avoidance features worked well, especially in car-to-car emergency braking situations.

Volkswagen Multivan Protects All Three Rows

The Volkswagen Multivan, which launched in New Zealand in 2022 and arrived in Australia this year, offers strong safety features for a people mover. It includes airbags for all seating rows, including a centre airbag to reduce injury between front seat occupants.

The Multivan scored 90% for Adult Occupant Protection and 88% for Child Occupant Protection. It also performed well in physical crash tests and offered reliable collision avoidance.

“For families and businesses transporting people regularly, the Multivan offers reassuring levels of protection throughout its three-rows as well as to those outside the vehicle,” said Ms Hoorweg.
