Among VAMA (Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association) members, total sales came to 29,774 units, up 89.9 per cent YoY. VAMA members collectively sold 22,440 passenger cars, 6,471 commercial vehicles, and 863 hybrid vehicles for the month of January. Passenger and commercial vehicle sales surged by 102.9 per cent and 79.1 9 per cent respectively, while hybrid vehicle sales declined by 4.5 per cent YoY.

TOYOTA UNSEATED

Among VAMA’s 20 members, only four manufacturers saw declines in sales compared to January 2025. This year, almost all members were able to significantly improve sales, thanks to improving market conditions in Vietnam.

For the month of January, Toyota was unseated as the best-selling brand among VAMA members and pushed back to 3rd place. Ford currently sits at the top with sales of 5,121 units and 13.9 per cent market share, increasing by 108.8 per cent YoY.

Mitsubishi followed closely behind with sales of 5,039 units and 13.7 per cent market share acquired. The brand saw a large improvement of 193.6 per cent compared to January last year.

Toyota took 3rd place and sold 4,852 units in January, acquiring 13.2 per cent market share. Despite ranking lower, the Japanese auto giant’s sales improved by 45 per cent YoY.

Thaco Mazda and Thaco Kia placed 4th and 5th  respectively. The former sold 3,515 units and secured 9.5 per cent market share. Thaco Mazda sales improved significantly by 73.1 per cent. Sister company Thaco Kia sold 3,487 units and also captured 9.5 per cent of the market. Compared to January last year, Thaco Kia’s sales rose by 88.9 per cent.

With a wide gap, Honda placed 6th and sold 2,712 vehicles. The Japanese automaker gained 7.4 per cent market share and saw a yearly improvement of 48.5 per cent.

Though the manufacturer placed 7th, Thaco Truck saw a surge in sales of 104.9 per cent compared to January last year. It sold 1,680 vehicles in January, acquiring a 4.6 per cent share of Vietnam’s car market.

Visuco, or Vietnam Suzuki Corporation, sold 954 vehicles last month, leading to 2.6 per cent market share gained. Compared to last year’s sales of 280, Visuco was able to see an improvement of 240.7 per cent.

Placing 9th, Isuzu sold 888 units last month and acquired 2.4 per cent market share. The company also saw an increase in sales of 62.3 per cent YoY.

Lastly, Hino sits at 10th place with sales of 337 units. Despite barely capturing 1% of market share, Hino’s sales rose greatly by 262.4 per cent.

NON-VAMA MEMBERS

In January 2026, VinFast delivered 16,172 units and won 27.4 per cent market share. Vietnam’s primary carmaker saw an improvement of 94.8 per cent compared to January last year. Its best-selling unit of the month was the Limo Green, with 3,868 deliveries. Its VF3 model followed closely with 3,185 deliveries while the VF5 recorded 2,737 deliveries.

Fellow non-VAMA member Hyundai acquired 10 per cent market share last month. It sold 5,872 vehicles, surging 91 per cent YoY.

Comparing the overall market’s general performance to last year, there is a significant rise in sales across the board. According to industry experts, January 2025’s weaker sales performance can be attributed to consumers saving up for Vietnamese New Year. Along with improving market conditions, this year’s rise also signifies a rise in consumer sentiment and recovery from holiday travel expenses.
