Vietnam’s car sales rose by 26.1 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in July, starting Q3 with a significant increase.

Sales overview 

According to sales data from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA) and non-VAMA members (VinFast and Hyundai), new vehicle sales in Vietnam for July amounted to 59,031 units, increasing by 26.1 per cent YoY. The year-to-date tally totalled 387,849 units, up 28.6 per cent from the same period last year.

Passenger vehicle sales fared positively, increased by 20 per cent YoY and totalling 25,190 units last month. Commercial vehicles, on the other hand, declined by 17 per cent compared with July last year. SPVs also increased by 10 per cent YoY with 629 units sold. Lastly, sales of hybrid vehicles rose by 38 per cent YoY, marking the biggest annual improvement among vehicle types in Vietnam.

VinFast maintained its continuous lead in sales with 21,781 new vehicles sold last month. The domestic EV maker’s sales skyrocketed by 89.7 per cent YoY and accounting for a 36.9 per cent market share in July. 

Toyota ranked second, well behind VinFast, with 6,866 units sold and 11.6 per cent market share acquired. Its sales increased slightly by 3 per cent YoY. Thaco-Kia fared similar YoY growth. The brand sold 4,770 units in July, rising by 3.1 per cent YoY and taking 8.1 per cent market share.  

Non-VAMA member Hyundai sold 3,543 units last month, placing it fourth Hyundai’s sales decreased by 1.6 per cent YoY and took a market share of 6 per cent. Mitsubishi’s sales also surpassed 3,000 units with 3,216 new vehicles sold last month. Its sales declined slightly by 0.5 per cent while it accounted for a 5.4 per cent market share. 

Ford faced the largest decline among the top 10 brands last month. The American car manufacturer sold 3,129 units, falling by 24.4 per cent YoY and acquiring 5.3 per cent market share.  

Mazda’s sales dipped by 5.9 per cent YoY to 2,557 vehicles. The company acquired 4.3 per cent market share, placing it at seventh. At 8th place is Honda with 2,129 units sold and 3.6 per cent market share acquired in July. Honda’s sales declined by 18.6 per cent YoY. 

Isuzu sold just over 1,000 units last month, improving its performance from last year by 1.8 per cent. The brand acquired 1.3 per cent market share, placing it at ninth. 

Finally, Suzuki ranked 10th with 568 units sold and 1 per cent market share acquired. Despite its comparatively low sales, the brand’s sales increased by as much as 27.4 per cent.
