New car sales and vehicle production both declined by 20 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in Malaysia for the month of February.
General overview
Data from the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) revealed that both sales and production declined by roughly 20 per cent YoY. Overall sales for the month of February amounted to 52,414 units, 19.6 per cent less compared to last year.
Of this figure, passenger car sales comprised 48,748 units, down 20.7 per cent YoY. Commercial vehicles fared better with 3,666 units sold last month, a slight decrease of 1.9 per cent compared to last year.
The year-to-date (YTD) tally so far amounted to 116,712 units. This is slightly better than sales from the same period last year by 0.8 per cent.
On the other hand, vehicle production also fell by 19.2 per cent YoY to 49,741 units. Since January, vehicle production has generally decreased by 6.6 per cent YoY, amounting to 110, 607 units.
Slower sales and production for the month of February can largely be attributed to fewer working days, with the month not only shorter but also impacted by Lunar New Year holidays across the region. Sales by OEM

Sales by brand
The country’s own Perodua and Proton maintained their rankings as 1st and 2nd place. Perodua sold 23,575 units last month, declining 9.8 per cent compared to January. Perodua’s performance was largely cushioned by sales of its Bezza, Axia, and Myvi models. Perodua’s sales for the first two months of the year came to 49,703 units so far.
Though Proton claimed the 2nd place spot, it has a difference of more than of 10,000 units compared to main competitor Perodua. The Malaysian carmaker sold 13,447 units in February, a notable 31.9 per cent decline month-over-month. January marked Proton’s highest sales in 15 years, bringing the brand’s YTD figures to 33,197 units.
Toyota took 3rd place with a little more than half of Proton’s sales but is the highest-selling non-Malaysian brand the month of February. The Japanese auto giant sold 6,993 units last month, rising slightly by 395 units since January.
Honda followed suit with sales of 3,379 units, while Chery almost made the 1,000-unit mark with 938 sold last month. Jaecoo sold 901, just slightly behind Chery while Mitsubishi saw sales of 889 units. Mercedes-Benz and Isuzu place 9th and 10th selling 659 units and 527 units respectively.
