A total of 66,053 new vehicles were registered in Malaysia in May 2026, declining 10.7 per cent year-on-year (YoY) and 15.1 per cent from the previous month.
General overview
While monthly registrations declined 21 per cent YoY, year-to-date (YTD) registrations came to 335,853 units in total. This number is composed of electric, petrol, hybrids, diesels, and green diesel engine types.
Among these registrations, 5,038 units or 7.63 per cent were electric vehicles (EVs). This marked an increase in EV registrations since last year from 4,152 units and 5.58 per cent market share last year. From January to May, total EV registrations came to 25,523 units, up almost 84 per cent YoY.
Hybrid vehicle registrations also increased significantly. From 12,093 units in May 2025 to 18,495 in May 2026, hybrid registrations rose by 52.94 per cent.
Majority of registrations were petrol vehicles with 277,375 units registered in May, down slightly by 5.69 per cent YoY. Green diesel vehicle registrations amounted to 14,089 units, declining 1 per cent YoY. Lastly, diesel vehicles saw a notable decline of 76.06 per cent YoY from 3,671 units to 879 units.
Registrations by brand
Malaysia’s domestic carmakers Perodua and Proton remain the country’s top two best-sellers in May 2026.
Perodua took majority of the market share with 37.1 per cent, selling 24,480 units in May alone. Though it is May’s top-seller, Perodua’s sales declined by a significant 22 per cent YoY. The brand dominated the country’s top 10 best-selling models of the month with its Bezza, Axia, Myvi, Alza, and Ativa models.
Direct competitor Proton came in second place with 16,140 units registered and 24.4 per cent market share captured. Though only two of its models are in the top 10 best-selling models of May, its Saga model emerged as no. 1 in rank. 7,337 units of the Proton Saga were registered, taking 11.1 per cent of the market and rising 37 per cent in registrations YoY. The Proton S70 came at 7th place in rank with 2,350 units registered and 3.6 market share acquired. Registrations of the S70 rose by 24.2 per cent YoY.

Toyota ranked third in number of registrations with 9,632 units and 14.6 market share acquired. The Japanese auto giant saw a decrease of 13.3 per cent in sales YoY.
Honda followed Toyota with a wide gap and 3,686 units registered. The brand captured 5.6 per cent of the market, also declining in sales by 37.8 per cent.
Omoda Jaecoo placed fifth, registering 1,328 vehicles this month and 2 per cent market share captured. It also saw an increase in sales of 16.3 per cent YoY. Mitsubishi followed behind with 1,182 units and 1.8 per cent market share acquired. The brand also improved sales by 6.5 per cent YoY.
Registrations of Mazda vehicles increased by 50.4 per cent YoY, with 1,062 vehicles and 1.6 per cent market share captured. Jetour experienced a remarkable increase in sales of 1,263.4 per cent YoY with 968 vehicles sold and 1.5 per cent market share acquired.
Finally, BYD saw a decline of 19.4 per cent YoY with 925 units registered and 1.4 per cent of Malaysia’s market share acquired. Chery took tenth place with 726 vehicles registered and declining by 48.8 per cent YoY.
