Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (JPJ) recalled around 5,000 cars from brands Kia and Mercedes-Benz over fire risks and fuse box issues. The announcement was released last 9 July and included 3,000 units from motorcycle manufacturer Yamaha, bringing the total to 8,000.

THE RECALLS

The newly released list of recalls from JPJ includes vehicles from Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Yamaha. Due to several issues and safety risks, the following models have been recalled:

  • Kia: RIO UB (2010 – 2017)
  • Yamaha: Tenere 700 (2023 – 2024), Tracer 9 GT (2021-2025), MT09 (2021 – 2025)
  • Mercedes-Benz (2023 – 2025): S-Class, GLC, AMG SL, EQS, EQE

On the list, JPJ announced for the recall of 5,123 units of the Kia RIO UB manufactured from 2010 to 2017. According to JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli, the RIO UB can short-circuit, leading to a fire risk with its Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU).

For Yamaha, the total number of motorcycle recalls amounted to 3,167 units. From this figure,1,649 units of the MT9 and 1,369 of the Tracer 9 GT manufactured from November 2021 to February 2025. These two models are at risk of having malfunctioning Throttle Position Sensors (TPS). Meanwhile, 149 units of the Tenere 700 is being recalled for issues with its clutch, which may prevent the vehicle from properly switch gears.

In Mercedes-Benz’s case, all models from the recall were manufactured from 2023 to 2025. All in all, a total of 32 units were recalled for the S-Class, GLC, AMG-SL, AMG-EQS, and AMG-EQE. For these models, the JPJ found an issue with the instalment of their fuse boxes.

REPAIR PROTOCOL

According to Ramli, the owners of the recalled vehicles should expect contact from their respective manufacturers. The recall will enable the manufacturers to properly inspect the affected vehicles and apply repairs. Additionally, the cost of the replacement and repairs of the affected components will be shouldered by the manufacturers.

“The recall is important to avoid crashes due to defects,” said Ramli. “All owners with affected models are asked to plan ahead to enable the recall and inspection to be done as soon as possible.”
