At the launch event of the newest SEAL model, BYD announced the construction of a new production plant in Perak, Malaysia.

THE NEW FACILITY

BYD’s upcoming Malaysia plant will begin production in 2026. The company secured its investment earlier through the Muallim Speed-Lane (M-SL): Fast-Track Construction Project. Initially, the project was created in 2023 by the Perak state government to position the Muallim district as a key location for automotive production.

The EV maker will set up its newest facility in Kuala Lumpur Kepong (KLK) Tech Park in Tanjung Malim, Perak. The location was secured with the help of KLK Land, the owner of the tech park.

“The new assembling plant will not only create employment opportunities but also support technology transfer, enhance expertise in EV manufacturing and encourage the growth of supporting industries,” said KLK Land.

Notably, the plant will produce completely knocked down (CKD) kits and span 600,000 square meters. It is also BYD’s fourth facility in Southeast Asia, with its first located in Thailand. Additionally, two more facilities in Cambodia and Indonesia are on the way and will begin production in late 2025 and January 2026.

BYD IN MALAYSIA

General Manager of BYD’s Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division Liu Xueliang said at the company’s launch event that Malaysia is one of the brand’s “most important markets in Southeast Asia.”

“The announcement of the CKD plan and the launch of the BYD SEAL represent the start of an exciting new chapter for us here,” he added.

Both the recent launch of the newest BYD SEAL and the new CKD factory will secure the company’s investment and long-term plans in the country. The launch marked a “triple milestone” which includes the newest SEAL, the CKD factory, and the opening of Malaysia’s largest BYD centre.

“Through our strong partnership with BYD Sime Motors, we are confident in deepening our roots in Malaysia and bringing world-class EV technology to local consumers. Our commitment goes beyond innovative products, we are investing in Malaysia’s EV future, from local assembly and talent development to comprehensive electrified mobility solutions. We look forward to working with Malaysia to accelerate the transition to a greener and smarter transportation future,” said Liu Xueliang at the launch event.

As Malaysia’s best-selling EV brand, BYD currently has 36 dealerships in the peninsula, with more to come later. The company also pledged to improve its after-sales services and broaden accessibility for EVs for Malaysian citizens.
