The latest safety assessments from ANCAP have added more electrified vehicles to the five-star category. New ratings issued for the BYD SEAL 6, MG4 EV Urban, and Tesla Model Y L. Meanwhile, the Skoda Octavia has retained its existing five-star result after reassessment.

The results cover a mix of plug-in hybrid and battery electric models across multiple vehicle segments, with strong performances noted in occupant protection and active safety technology.

BYD SEAL 6 records strongest adult occupant score

The BYD SEAL 6 achieved the highest Adult Occupant Protection result in this round of testing, scoring 92 per cent.

Available in sedan and wagon form, the plug-in hybrid recorded strong results across all four assessment pillars:

  • Adult Occupant Protection: 92 per cent
  • Child Occupant Protection: 90 per cent
  • Vulnerable Road User Protection: 84 per cent
  • Safety Assist: 84 per cent

ANCAP said protection for drivers and passengers was rated good across nearly all key body regions in crash testing. The vehicle also features a centre airbag designed to reduce injury in side-impact crashes.

MG4 EV Urban scores strongly in safety technology

The MG4 EV Urban secured a five-star rating with balanced scores across occupant protection and crash avoidance systems.

The electric hatch achieved:

  • Adult Occupant Protection: 87 per cent
  • Child Occupant Protection: 86 per cent
  • Vulnerable Road User Protection: 85 per cent
  • Safety Assist: 82 per cent

ANCAP noted that the MG4 EV Urban performed strongly in frontal and side impact crash tests, while its autonomous emergency braking system delivered solid results in pedestrian and cyclist scenarios. The rating applies across the full MG4 EV Urban range.

Tesla Model Y L assessed for six-seat configuration

The six-seat Tesla Model Y L also received a five-star ANCAP rating following additional assessment work based on the existing five-seat Model Y testing program.

The longer-wheelbase electric SUV recorded:

  • Adult Occupant Protection: 91 per cent
  • Child Occupant Protection: 84 per cent
  • Vulnerable Road User Protection: 86 per cent
  • Safety Assist: 92 per cent
  • Safety Assist was the strongest category for the Model Y L, with ANCAP highlighting the vehicle’s suite of advanced driver assistance systems, including autonomous emergency braking, lane support technologies and speed assistance systems.

However, ANCAP identified challenges around child restraint installation in the second and third rows. The organisation said some restraints could not be correctly fitted due to tether routing limitations and ISOFix access in the rear seating positions.

Skoda Octavia retains five-star rating

The Skoda Octavia maintained its five-star safety rating following reassessment of vehicles built from July 2025 onward.

The updated assessment returned the following scores:

  • Adult Occupant Protection: 85 per cent
  • Child Occupant Protection: 81 per cent
  • Vulnerable Road User Protection: 81 per cent
  • Safety Assist: 82 per cent

Growing range of safer electrified vehicles

ANCAP Chief Executive Officer Carla Hoorweg said the latest results reflected the increasing availability of highly rated electrified vehicles across different market segments.

“These results highlight clear strengths across these models. The BYD SEAL 6 leads the group on Adult Occupant Protection, the Tesla Model Y L tops it on Safety Assist, and the MG4 EV Urban holds its own against both as a small electric car,” Ms Hoorweg said.

“Buyers now have more choice than ever before. ANCAP star ratings provide independent, rigorous assessments of how well vehicles prevent crashes and protect occupants and other road users in serious crashes – meaning consumers can make an informed choice when it comes to safety. Safety information should always be non-negotiable in any vehicle purchase,” she added.
