Hyundai Motor Group is set to establish an AI vehicle manufacturing plant in Ulsan province, South Korea.
Investing in the future
Hyundai’s newest major investment of KRW 42 trillion (AUD $40 billion) covers the southeast region of its home country, South Korea. The investment supports a range of industries such as AI-defined vehicles (AI DV), AI-powered manufacturing, aerospace, and sustainable energy infrastructure.
The group defined AI DVs as vehicles that “leverage artificial intelligence to continuously learn from vehicle data and make autonomous decisions.” Hyundai will target a minimum of Level 4 autonomous driving capability.
Part of the investment will fund the company’s upcoming AI DV factory at its Ulsan plant. Hyundai’s Ulsan plant is also known as “the world’s largest single integrated automotive manufacturing facility.” The Ulsan hub will also have a dedicated electric vehicle (EV) plant and hydrogen fuel cell plant.
Partnering up
Additionally, Hyundai will build several processes with different specialties across Korea’s southern provinces, including; Busan, Daegu, Ulsan, Gyeongnam and Gyeongbuk. Ulsan will see a new battery assembly line for Hyundai Mobis, while Daegu will receive a motor and controller production line for the same Hyundai subsidiary. On the other hand, Hyundai Wia will receive an EV thermal management system production line in Gyeongsang province.
Hyundai Motor Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with four of Korea’s government ministries and the local governments of Busan, Daegu, Ulsan, Gyeongnam, and Gyeongbuk. South Korean President Lee Jae-myung was also a signatory of the MoU.
