Indonesia’s February passenger car sales increased by 12.2 per cent year-on-year (YoY).

MARKET OVERVIEW

Data released by the Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO) revealed that new passenger car sales in Indonesia reached 81,159 units. February’s sales rose by 22.1 per cent from January and 12.2 per cent YoY. This brings the year-to-date (YTD) tally to 147,631 units

CHINESE CARMAKERS SALES SURGE

Though Japanese legacy brands still dominate the top 10, Chinese manufacturers made their way into the top 6th and 7th spots, driven by EV sales. BYD, for example, grew its sales by 232.6 per cent YoY. The EV maker sold 4,653 units last month and captured 5.7 per cent of the current market. Its YTD sales are at 9,532 units, almost 280 per cent higher than the same period last year.

BYD’s most popular model of the month was the Atto 1 (also known as Dolphin). The model was launched in Indonesia last October 2025. Since then, the model’s sales have declined with its market share decreasing from 12.7 per cent to a low of 4.6 per cent.

New entrant Jaecoo debuted in the Indonesian car market in January last year. Last month, the brand recorded 3,005 units sold, bringing its YTD sales to 5,030 units overall. Currently, there is no data from last year to compare with, but the Chinese automaker managed to acquire 3.7 per cent of the market. Jaecoo’s sales were mainly drive by its J5 model, which was the 8th best-selling vehicle of February 2026.

Both Jaecoo and BYD’s sales in February indicate Indonesia’s gradual transition to EVs.

PICK-UPS RISE TO THE TOP

Indonesia’s mainstays remained in the top 5, namely; Toyota, Daihatsu, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, and Honda. Toyota and Daihatsu maintained the number 1 and 2 positions. The former sold 22,522 units last month, while the former sold 13,452 units.  Toyota’s sales slipped 7.7 per cent compared to last year while Daihatsu improved by 12.5 per cent. Still, Toyota captured 27.8 per cent of the total market and its subsidiary captured another 16.6 per cent.

So far in 2026, Toyota has sold 42,600 units, 8.3 per cent lower than the same period last year. In contrast, Daihatsu’s YTD sales rose by 18.3 per cent YoY to 25,965 units.

Suzuki jumped to 3rd place from 6th place last month. The automaker sold 9,659 units and acquired 11.9 per cent market share. Overall sales for 2026 amounted to 12,442 units so far. Both monthly and YTD sales surged by 103.3 per cent and 27.8 per cent respectively.

This vast improvement in sales can be credited to the rise of the Suzuki New Carry Pikap, which topped the wholesales ranks. The mini pick-up took 8.2 per cent of the market and reclaimed its no. 1 spot for the first time since January 2022. The Suzuki New Carry Pikap overtook the Toyota Kijang Innova and Daihatsu Gran Max Pikap, which have fallen to 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Mitsubishi’s truck and bus arm, Mitsubishi Fuso, took 8th place with 2,506 units and 3.1 per cent market share acquired. Its monthly sales improved by 19 per cent since last year, bringing the YTD tally to 4,838 units. So far, its 2026 sales are 14.9 per cent higher compared to January to February of last year.
