Electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid registrations recorded significantly stronger growth than petrol vehicle registrations in Malaysia during June 2026.
General overview
According to data released by Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (JPJ), overall new vehicle registrations reached 72,943 units for June 2026. This reflects a strong month for new vehicle registrations in Malaysia, with registrations increasing by 23.93 per cent year-on-year (YoY).

Compared with June last year, hybrids and EV registrations grew significantly in the monthly figures by 172.89 per cent and 89.94 per cent respectively. This growth was also reflected in the year-to-date figures. For the first half of 2026, EV registrations increased by 85.14 per cent while hybrid registrations increased by 70.46 per cent.
All increases so far for low-emission vehicles reflect the growing trend towards EVs and hybrids in the country. This trend is supported by government incentives for both EV manufacturers and buyers. Furthermore, the global oil crisis has pushed motorists to consider EVs to reduce petrol consumption.

Perodua and Proton, Malaysia’s domestic car makers, maintain their positions as the country’s no. 1 and no. 2 auto brands. Perodua led by with more than a third of the market acquired with 37.7 per cent and 27,517 vehicles sold in June 2026. This lead was largely helped by sales of the brand’s Bezza model, which emerged as the top vehicle of the month.
Proton, on the other hand, claimed second place with 15,450 new vehicles sold. Its Saga model was overtaken by the Perodua Bezza, selling 7,000 units in the month of June.
Both Malaysian brands dominated the top 10 best-selling vehicles of the month. Only one foreign model, the Honda City, appeared in the list. The model climbed seven spots from 12th place last month to fifth place in June with 3,880 units sold. Honda ranked fourth in the top 10 brand rankings.
Third-place Toyota sold 9,705 units in June capturing a 13.3 per cent market share. The Japanese auto giant remained in the top five of Malaysia’s best-selling auto brands despite none of its models entering the top 10 of the month. Its Vios and Hilux models moved two spots down to 11th and 12th place this month from ninth and 10th in May.
The most notable difference between May and June auto sales belong to American EV maker Tesla. Tesla rose by a staggering 11 places from 21st place in May to 10th place in June. It sold 935 units, acquiring 1.3 per cent of the market and increasing its share by one percentage point.
