Battery electric vehicle (EV) sales accounted for 11.8 per cent of Australia’s new car market in February 2026, with 7,715 EVs sold during the month.

Data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries shows EV sales increased from an 8.4 per cent market share in January. Overall, new vehicle sales for the month exceeded 90,000 units.

When additional sales data from the Electric Vehicle Council is included, total EV sales reached 11,134 vehicles out of 94,131 new cars sold during February.

The result represents a significant increase year-on-year, with EVs accounting for 5.9 per cent of the Australian market in February 2025.

Tesla and BYD lead EV sales

Tesla recorded more than 3,200 EV sales during February, while BYD delivered 2,969 vehicles.  Chinese brand Zeekr also recorded strong results, with its new Zeekr 7X delivering 628 units in its second month on sale.

Sales growth during the month was supported by manufacturer incentives and the continued launch of lower-priced EV models entering the Australian market.

Top-selling EV models

The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling EV in February with 2,791 units sold.  It was followed by the BYD Sealion 7 with 1,327 sales and the Zeekr 7X with 628 units. Rounding out the top five were the Tesla Model 3 with 483 sales and the Geely EX5 with 416 units.

Other models among the top EV sellers included the MG MG4, BYD Atto 3, Omoda Jaecoo J5, BYD Atto 1, BYD Atto 2, and the BYD Seal.

Year-to-date EV sales rise

EV sales during the first two months of 2026 reached 18,543 units, compared with 9,516 over the same period in 2025.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle sales also increased, with 5,854 units sold in February compared with 4,871 in February last year.

Industry figures show EV sales rebounded strongly in February following a slower start to the year in January.
