Electric vehicle (EV) registrations have increased by a staggering 148 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in Malaysia.
New vehicles in July
According to data released by Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (JPJ), a total of 80,030 new vehicles were registered in July. New vehicle registrations increased by 5.77 per cent from July last year.
While petrol vehicles held the largest share, with 63,754 units registered in July, registrations declined by 3.25 per cent YoY. Similarly, new green diesel vehicle registrations also declined by 15.66 per cent YoY. Diesel vehicle registrations declined the most by 45.31 per cent compared to the same month last year.

EVs and hybrids performed similarly compared to June, outpacing petrol and diesel-powered vehicles. Hybrid vehicle registrations totalled of 5,621 units in July, jumping 127.20 per cent YoY. EVs performed in yearly comparisons, increasing 148.46 per cent from July last year.
Top 10 brands
Domestic brands Perodua and Proton remained Malaysia’s top-sellers in July. Perodua ranked first with 31,842 new vehicle registrations and nearly 40 per cent of Malaysia’s car market.
Fellow Malaysian brand Proton ranked second well behind Perodua. More than 17,000 Proton units were registered in July, capturing 21.26 per cent of the market.
Though Toyota ranked third amongst the top 10, it was the highest-selling foreign brand for the month of July. The JPJ recorded 11,822 new Toyota units in July, accounting for 14.77 per cent market share.
Honda took fourth place with 5,369 units registered in July and a 6.71 per cent market share.
Chinese carmaker Omoda Jaecoo rounded out the top 5 best-selling brands for July. The brand recorded 1,309 new units last month, accounting for a 1.64 per cent market share.
Though EV sales are increasing in Malaysia, EV giant BYD’s performance so far in 2026 has only placed the brand in the country’s top 10. In July, the brand recorded 1,226 new units registered, accounting for a 1.53 per cent market share.
New car registrations under Jetour amounted to 1,216 units and acquired 1.52 market share. Mazda followed suit with 1,027 new registrations and 1.28 per cent market share captured. Fellow Japanese carmaker Mitsubishi sold 1,012 units, following closely behind competitor Mazda.
Lastly, 831 new units under Chery were registered last month, accounting for a 1.04 per cent market share.
