AfMA is proud to announce the return of its Empowering Women in the Workplace Online Training Course, taking place on Thursday, 11 September 2025. Delivered in partnership with Swinburne Edge – Swinburne University of Technology, this interactive one-day program is designed to help women in the fleet and automotive industries strengthen their confidence, overcome unconscious bias, and enhance their leadership potential.
We spoke with Larlee Crabtree, who attended the first training, shared her journey and the impact the course had on her professional development.
Finding Support in a Male-Dominated Industry
Coming from a background in HR, Larlee quickly noticed how male-dominated the transport sector was after joining the industry.
“When my manager sent through the invite to AFMA’s Women in Fleet Management Workshop, I thought it would be a great opportunity to connect with others who might be in the same position,” Larlee said.
“Connecting with women across the fleet industry made this workshop a lot more enjoyable. We were able to share experiences and provide advice to each other based on how others may have tackled similar situations in the past,” she added.
The Lasting Impact of Emotional Intelligence
For Larlee, one of the most valuable lessons was understanding the role of emotional intelligence both in herself and in others.
“I learnt a lot about emotional intelligence and how to spot this, or the lack of this, in others,” Larlee explained.
“From here, we spoke a lot about looking inwards and adjusting your communicative approach to account for levels of emotional intelligence. We also touched a lot on negative self-talk and the opportunity to reframe perspective here.”
The workshop also positively influenced how she saw her career path, as well as the contribution of women in the fleet sector.
Why Women and Their Leaders Should Prioritise This Training
When asked about why women in the industry should participate in the next event, she said, “It’s a great opportunity to connect with like-minded women across the industry and share tools to assist with similar obstacles you might face as a woman in fleet management.”
The course isn’t just an investment for individual participants; it’s also an opportunity for leaders to empower women within their organisations. Research shows that while men often apply for jobs when they meet just 60% of the requirements, women typically feel they need to meet 100%. This training challenges those unconscious barriers, equipping participants with the tools to step forward with confidence.
