Autonomous vehicles are the next emerging trend in the Thai car market with the local industry and its leaders looking very seriously at this emerging trend.
A POSITIVE OUTLOOK
Known as the “Auto King of Asia,” Thailand is seeing significant growth in its autonomous mobility.
For a few years during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, Thailand’s car market struggled to bounce back from a sharp decline in sales. Since then, the electric vehicle (EV) boom has largely contributed to Thailand’s overall car sales and automotive trend cycles.
According to the Bangkok Post, the wave of autonomous vehicles is “inevitable.” Thailand’s industry leaders see the incoming wave as a financial, environmental, and technological advantage.
“Autonomous technology will transform the driving experience for everyone,” said Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) Auto Club, vice-chairman and spokesperson Surapong Paisitpatanapong. “Global carmakers are building a future where vehicles give people back their time and make driving safer, easier and more enjoyable.”
The Bangkok Post’s article continued to argue that while autonomous vehicle adoption is possible and beneficial, it will take structural and political support to effectively welcome.
INCOMING WAVE
Growing interest in autonomous vehicles has allowed the Thai government to collaborate with car manufacturers to develop research into advance connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) technology. The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (NHSO) conducted this research and development in the Rayong province.
The Rayong province houses the Eastern Economic Corridor of Innovation, where testing grounds, sensors, and several systems allow AVs to be effectively tested. The proving grounds allow up to level 5 of autonomous driving to be tested.
“This project would add value to Thailand’s future automotive industry,” said NHSO inspector-general Wannee Nonsiri.
In early January 2026, Tesla announced it was hiring full-time vehicle operators for its Robotaxi service in Thailand.
Robotaxi began as Tesla’s “experimental fleet” of autonomous vehicles as part of a ride-sharing service. Since starting in June 2025, Robotaxi has expanded to several international markets, such as the UK, Austria, Taiwan, India, and more. To date, Thailand is the 20th country in its lineup.
