ANCAP has awarded the all-electric BYD Sealion 7 a five-star safety rating, making it the latest model in BYD’s growing range to earn top marks. It achieved strong results across all four key safety areas. This rating applies to all models built from January 2025 and is valid until December 2031.
Strong Results in Crash Tests
The Sealion 7 received an 87 per cent score for Adult Occupant Protection. It earned full points in the side impact, oblique pole, and far-side impact tests. However, ANCAP rated the chest protection for a rear passenger in the full-width test as Weak.
For Child Occupant Protection, the SUV scored an impressive 93 per cent, matching the highest score awarded under ANCAP’s 2023–2025 protocols. Both the 6-year-old and 10-year-old dummies received Good ratings in the frontal offset and side impact tests, with maximum points awarded.
It also has a direct child presence detection (CPD) system. This alerts drivers if a child is left in the back seat.
Crash Avoidance Technology
The Sealion 7 also performed well in crash avoidance tests. It includes autonomous emergency braking (AEB) systems that respond to cars, pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and other road users. It scored 76 per cent for Vulnerable Road User Protection and 78 per cent for Safety Assist.
Standard features include Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with Car-to-Car, Junction, Backover, and Head-On support. Other features include lane keep assist, lane departure warning, emergency lane keeping, and advanced speed assistance with sign recognition.
A Focus on Family Safety
“As electrified vehicles continue to advance technologically, it’s encouraging to see equal investment in safety, ensuring that innovation and the protection of drivers, passengers and families go hand in hand,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, Carla Hoorweg.
“Around 5,000 children are rescued from locked cars every year in Australia and, sadly, we have seen recent instances with tragic consequences. ANCAP strongly encourages the inclusion of features like child presence detection systems that can alert a driver when a child may have been unintentionally left in a car – this safety feature belongs on every family’s shopping list when purchasing a new car.”
