The JAC T9 dual cab ute has made a strong entrance into the Australian market, securing a 5-star safety rating from ANCAP. Launched in August 2024, this Ute stands out in the competitive segment with its solid safety credentials. The 5-star rating applies to the 2.0L diesel variants of the vehicle.
Safety Features
The vehicle is packed with a full suite of safety features including frontal, side chest-protecting, and side head-protecting airbags. Additionally, the JAC T9 is equipped with a centre airbag, offering extra protection for front seat occupants during side impact crashes.
The ute also comes with advanced autonomous emergency braking (AEB) systems, which can detect and respond to vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorbikes in various situations, including Car-to-Car, Vulnerable Road User, Junction Assist, Crossing, Backover, and Head-On scenarios.
A key feature of the JAC T9 is its advanced lane support system (LSS), which includes lane keep assist (LKA), lane departure warning (LDW), and emergency lane keeping (ELK). These systems are standard across all variants, helping the driver maintain lane discipline and avoid collisions. The ute also features an advanced speed assistance system (SAS) and an anti-dooring system that alerts the driver to cyclists approaching from behind when the vehicle is stationary.
Strong Performance in Crash Tests
In crash tests, the JAC T9 demonstrated excellent occupant protection, scoring top marks for the driver in full-width frontal, side impact, far side impact, and whiplash tests. The results for the driver’s chest protection were deemed Adequate in the oblique pole and frontal offset tests.
However, the assessment rated the rear passenger’s chest protection in the full-width frontal test as Marginal. Despite this, the JAC T9 excelled in child occupant protection. It earned full points in both the frontal offset and side-impact tests.
The JAC T9’s safety scores are:
- Adult Occupant Protection: 85% (34.29 out of 40)
- Child Occupant Protection: 87% (43.00 out of 49)
- Vulnerable Road User Protection: 87% (54.93 out of 63)
- Safety Assist: 89% (16.15 out of 18)
ANCAP Chief Executive Officer Carla Hoorweg praised JAC’s commitment to safety in the Australian market.
“JAC has clearly committed to bringing high levels of safety performance to the Australian market with the T9, and they are to be commended for achieving these strong results with their first offering,” she said.
While the JAC T9 compares favourably to other utes like the Mitsubishi Triton, it did show room for improvement in crash compatibility. This was particularly evident in the MPDB (Mobile Progressive Deformable Barrier) test. The T9 recorded a 6.22-point penalty out of 8.00, compared to the 3.16 point penalty recorded by the Triton.
Overall, the JAC T9 offers strong safety performance, supported by a range of active safety features. This makes it a compelling choice for those prioritising safety. However, it’s important to note that the installation of child restraints in the rear centre seating position is not recommended. This is due to the absence of a top tether anchorage.
