Vietnam’s car market continues to improve with a 16.3 per cent improvement year-on-year. The Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) members and non-members released their records of March 2025’s sales earlier this month.
The report stated 31,750 units sold last month, 14,887 of which were CKD (completely knocked down), and 16,863 units were CBU (completely built up). Passenger vehicles comprised most sales with 18,075 units sold, a 5.5 per cent increase from March last year. 7,008 commercial vehicles were sold, also at an increase of 12.3 per cent from last year’s 6,240 units sold. Only 94 special purpose vehicles (SPV) were sold last month, a 16.1 per cent decrease from last year’s 112 units sold. Finally, hybrid vehicle sales increase by 39.8 per cent from 645 units sold last year to 902 sold last month.
Statistics from Vietnam’s General Statistics Office (GSO) report 58,075 new vehicles produced both locally and imported. This is also an increase from February’s figure of 49,571 new units registered. On the other hand, Vietnam’s domestic car production also increased by 15 per cent compared to February 2025. March saw 36,700 units produced, a noticeable increase of 63.6 per cent on-year.
VAMA MEMBERS
VAMA members collectively sold 26,079 units last month, an 8.1 increase from March of last year. Toyota remains number one amongst VAMA members with 5,370 units sold and 16.9 per cent of the car market acquired. The auto giant’s sales improved by 38.9 per cent compared to March of last year. So far, Toyota sold 11,830 units overall this year.
Mitsubishi is second to Toyota with 4,272 vehicles sold in March and 13.9 per cent of the market share. This improvement is measured at 28.3 per cent from 3,439 units sold last year. So far, Mitsubishi has sold 7,920 vehicles this 2024. Ford closely behind with 4,412 units sold and 13.5 per cent of the market share acquired. For the year 2025, Ford sold 9,482 units with an improvement of 15.9 per cent from last year.
Daewoo Bus saw the biggest increase with a 191.7 per cent jump from last year. The Korean bus manufacturer sold 35 vehicles last month and 73 overall this year.
In contrast, Suzuki’s sales fell by a staggering 65 per cent from 1,750 units sold last year to only 612 sold last month. Honda’s sales also fell by a lesser degree at 13.5 per cent. The auto maker sold only 2,450 units last month, less than its sales of 3,686 units in March of last year.
NON-VAMA MEMBERS
Meanwhile non-VAMA member Vinfast confirmed over 12,100 deliveries of their electric vehicles (EV) last month. Majority of VinFast’s registrations are of the VF 5 model with over 4,400 units delivered. The VF 3 model was also popular with 3,700 deliveries last month. According to the EV maker, the VF 3 is its “leading model” with 13,100 vehicles delivered in 2025 so far.
Non-VAMA member Hyundai bounced back from poor sales in early 2025. With a staggering increase of 77.6 per cent on-month, the Korean auto maker sold 5,368 vehicles in total last March. The Accent was its top-selling model with 1,049 vehicles sold. Following this is the Tucson with 1,046 units sold. So far, Hyundai’s sales for the year 2025 have amounted to 11,474 units sold overall.
