National used car sales showed steady growth in October 2025, according to the latest Automotive Insights Report (AIR) released by the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA).

A total of 206,503 vehicles changed hands last month, up 2.8 per cent compared to September, highlighting a stable market for buyers and sellers alike.

Hybrids continue strong growth

The report showed used hybrid vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, with sales more than doubling over the past two years. In October 2023, 6,868 hybrid vehicles were sold, compared with 14,784 last month.

The surge reflects consumer interest in practical options that offer lower running costs and reduced emissions without sacrificing convenience.

Listings of used hybrids also rose sharply, up 21.1 per cent month-on-month. This increase in supply points to growing dealer confidence in the segment and stronger consumer demand.

Electric vehicles steadily gaining traction

While hybrid vehicles led the growth, used electric vehicle (EV) sales also saw a modest increase. A total of 3,231 EVs were sold in October, up 7.9 per cent from September, showing continued interest in zero-emission alternatives among buyers.

The AADA also noted that total used car listings fell slightly, down 3.9 per cent to 325,018 vehicles, while dealers accounted for 52.4 per cent of all sales. SUVs remained the most popular vehicle type, representing over 43 per cent of all used car transactions.
