Australia’s used car market showed clear signs of cooling in November, with both sales and listings declining across the country, according to the latest Automotive Insights Report (AIR) released by the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) in partnership with AutoGrab.

Sales decline across all states

National used car sales fell 6.4 per cent month-on-month to 193,266 vehicles, with every state and territory reporting a decline. AADA CEO James Voortman said the figures reflected a broader softening in market conditions.

“November saw a clear softening across the board, with fewer buyers active in the market and a gradual reduction in stock levels,” he said.

According to the report, average days to sell increased to 46.7 days, pointing to slower turnover. Total active listings also fell 3.5 per cent to 313,781, with most regions experiencing reduced supply.

Fuel types and vehicle segments

Sales declined at a largely consistent rate across petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric vehicles, indicating that the softening affected the market evenly. Despite the slowdown, SUVs continued to perform strongly, accounting for more than 43 per cent of all used car sales in November.

Mr Voortman noted that the softer activity was clearer evident at the dealership level.

“Fewer leads, longer days to sell, and a shift toward more deliberate consumer purchasing behaviour are all being felt on the ground,” he said.
