A new global survey from the Global EV Drivers Alliance (GEVA) has revealed that 92 per cent of electric vehicle (EV) owners plan to buy another electric car when it’s time to replace their current one. The survey, conducted between 27th August and 20th November 2024, gathered insights from over 23,000 EV drivers across 18 countries.
“This high number shows that EV drivers are really happy with their decision,” said Joel Levin, chair of GEVA and Director of Plug In America. “Electric cars are here to stay.”
The survey also found that just 1 per cent of drivers would consider going back to petrol or diesel vehicles. Another 4 per cent said they would replace their car with a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).
“These results go against the idea that EV popularity is fading,” said Petter Haugneland, Assistant Secretary General of The Norwegian EV Association. “It’s clear that EV drivers are highly satisfied with their choice.”
Why Are People Choosing EVs?
While helping the environment is important, the financial benefits of EVs are a major draw. Lower running costs were the main reason people gave for choosing an electric vehicle.
“This is a signal to policymakers everywhere,” said Ellen Hiep, board member of the Dutch Electric Vehicle Drivers Association. “Making EVs more affordable is key to encouraging even more people to make the switch.”
Along with cost savings, the environmental impact came second in importance for most drivers.
Charging Still Needs Work
The number of charging stations is increasing. However, some issues still need attention, particularly with fast-charging stations. Many drivers cited the lack of fast chargers as a major frustration. Long charging times and occasional breakdowns of charging stations were also common complaints.
“Like other consumers, EV drivers want convenience,” said Christian Peter, Director of EMC ElektroMobilitätsClub of Austria. “While most EV drivers charge at home, improving the charging experience is crucial for growing the global EV market.”
The GEVA survey is one of the most comprehensive studies of EV driver experiences, with input from 18 countries. Researchers weighted the results to reflect each country’s share of the global EV fleet, ensuring they accurately represent EV drivers worldwide.
“This survey helps us understand what EV drivers want and need, no matter where they are,” said Silvia Rojas, Executive Director of the Costa Rican Association of Electric Mobility (ASOMOVE). “The insights we’ve gained will help shape the future of electric transport and encourage more drivers to make the switch.”
