A new solar-powered tonneau cover for Utes could offer drivers a way to generate power while on the road. Worksport Ltd. recently announced the SOLIS Solar Tonneau Cover, developed for the Rivian R1T electric Ute. This cover features integrated solar panels designed to provide power for tools, devices, and potentially even the vehicle itself.
The product aims to meet the needs of Ute drivers who work or travel in areas where access to external power sources is limited. By using solar energy, drivers can potentially reduce their reliance on traditional power outlets or generators.
Potential Applications for Ute Drivers
One of the cover’s expected features is Level 2 charging capability, which would allow drivers to recharge the vehicle’s battery from solar power. While this could offer a range extension during long journeys, the effectiveness of this feature will depend on factors such as sunlight availability and vehicle usage.
The ability to charge tools directly from the vehicle could prove useful for tradespeople working on remote job sites. Similarly, for outdoor enthusiasts, the cover could offer a source of energy during camping trips or other off-grid activities.
“We are excited to expand our product offerings to include accessories for the Rivian R1T, aligning with our mission to provide innovative and sustainable solutions for the evolving automotive market,” said Worksport Chief Executive Officer Steven Rossi.
Additional Features and Considerations
In addition to providing power, the SOLIS Solar Tonneau Cover is designed to protect the Ute’s cargo bed from weather and theft. It is also engineered to improve the vehicle’s aerodynamics, potentially enhancing efficiency.
“Our SOLIS Solar Cover and COR Portable Energy System will be excellent companions for Rivian owners who value utility, versatility, and environmental responsibility. We believe this strategic initiative will not only drive growth for Worksport but also enhance the ownership experience for Rivian customers,” Rossi further explained.
Sustainability in the EV Market
With the increasing adoption of electric Utes, products like the SOLIS Solar Tonneau Cover reflect a broader trend toward integrating renewable energy into everyday vehicle use.
However, the practicality of solar-powered solutions for vehicle charging is still evolving, and the overall impact on reducing drivers’ dependence on traditional power sources will likely vary.
