New vehicle registrations are up 5.1 percent in October 2022 compared to the same period last year as 14,736 new cars were sold in New Zealand this month.

According to the Motor Industry Association Principal Technical Advisor Mark Stockdale, this month’s numbers “benefited from strong deliveries of back orders for vehicles with electrification in their drive train”.

Toyota was the overall market leader with 20% market share (2,969 units), followed by Mitsubishi with 14% (2,019 units) and Ford in third spot with 13% market share (1,972 units).

Overall, the top three models for the month of October were the Ford Ranger (1491 units), followed by the Mitsubishi Outlander (1,030 units) and the Toyota RAV4 in third place (746 units).

The top selling passenger and SUV models for the month were the Mitsubishi Outlander (1,030 units) followed by the Toyota RAV4 (746 units) and then the Toyota Corolla (478 units).

Meanwhile, the Ford Ranger took top spot for the month of October as the bestselling commercial model with 38% share (1,491 units) followed by the Toyota Hilux with 16% share (638 units) and the Mitsubishi Triton in third place with 6% market share (230 units).

On the side of alternative fuel vehicles, there were 1,083 BEV passenger vehicles, 42 BEV light commercial vehicles, 25 BEV heavy vehicles, 919 PHEV’s and 2,281 petrol hybrid vehicles sold for the month.

In terms of segmentation, the SUV medium segment with led the market with 25% share followed by SUV compact vehicles also with 23% then the Pickup/Chassis 4×4 segment with 15% market share.
