The next generation of hydrogen fuel cell (FC) technology has been unveiled at the H2 and FC EXPO in Tokyo, Japan. This new system was developed by Toyota Motor Corporation. It reportedly offers significant improvements in fuel efficiency, durability, and cost-effectiveness compared to the previous generation. The advancements are based on extensive customer feedback and data from demonstration projects in Japan, particularly in Tokyo and Fukushima.

Improved Tech for Commercial Fleets

According to Toyota, this third generation FC system plays a crucial role in “realising a hydrogen society”.  It offers durability similar to diesel engines while improving fuel efficiency by 20%, allowing vehicles to travel farther on the same amount of hydrogen.

In addition to better performance, the system is now more cost-effective. Advances in cell design and manufacturing have made it more economically viable. This can help businesses transition to cleaner energy solutions. It is also expected to increase the adoption of hydrogen FC technology across multiple industries.

Expanding Hydrogen’s Role in Transportation

The system is set to power a range of vehicles including passenger cars , stationary power generators, and rail transport. However, its biggest impact will be in heavy-duty commercial vehicles, where its durability and high-power output make it a strong alternative to diesel engines.

Since 2019, Toyota has supplied over 2,700 fuel cell systems to more than 100 customers worldwide.

In a press release, Toyota said “it views hydrogen as an important fuel in the pursuit of carbon neutrality.”
“It is collaborating with partners across different industry sectors and has been promoting initiatives in the areas of Create, Transport, Store and Use hydrogen in relation to its R&D activities. Continuous evolution of FC technology is necessary to further accelerate its adoption to help achieve a hydrogen society. The third generation FC system represents a significant step-change in this process.”

Toyota plans to introduce the 3rd Gen FC System to major markets including Japan, Europe, North America, and China by 2026.
