The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has awarded a $9 million grant to BluVein to trial its groundbreaking dynamic charging technology for heavy haulage battery-electric mining vehicles.
The project, known as the BluVein Electric Heavy Haulage Project, will test BluVein’s “hammer and rail” charging system, which enables vehicles to charge safely while in motion.
Tackling Diesel Reliance in Mining
ARENA CEO Darren Miller said the trial represents a major opportunity to cut emissions from one of Australia’s most energy-intensive industries.
“Australia’s heavy industries are a major source of emissions and energy use. If we’re serious about hitting our climate targets, we need bold solutions,” Mr Miller said.
“BluVein’s innovative hammer and rail technology could reduce Australia’s reliance on billions of litres of diesel fuel by using renewable energy delivered through the grid to power mining haul trucks.”
From Underground to Ultra-Class Vehicles
The first phase of the project will see the development of a 40-60 tonne prototype truck equipped with BluVein’s BluVein1 system (approximately 1MW) for underground mining. A second stage will extend the technology to ultra-class surface haul trucks, using the higher-capacity BluVeinXL system (around 8MW).
The scalable design offers benefits beyond emissions reduction, including improved worker safety through its protected rail system, and flexibility to adapt to different mine layouts.
Boosting Low-Emission Metals Supply Chains
Reducing diesel reliance is critical to producing low-emission metals, which are increasingly in demand as part of global supply chain diversification. By electrifying heavy machinery and site operations, the mining sector can play a central role in Australia’s transition to a cleaner economy.
BluVein CEO James Oliver said the support from ARENA is a milestone for the company and the industry.
“This project, supported by ARENA, will demonstrate how BluVein1 and BluVeinXL can decarbonise Australia’s mining sector by enabling safe, in-motion electrification. By reducing diesel reliance, we aim to lower emissions and enhance operational efficiency, paving the way for sustainable mining practices,” Mr Oliver said.
The BluVein trial is funded under ARENA’s Industrial Transformation Stream Program. While Round 2 of the program is now closed, Round 3 is expected to open in late 2025.
