The all-electric Hyundai Inster has received a four-star safety rating from ANCAP. While it performed well in crash avoidance tests, weaker results in crash protection areas held back its rating.

During crash tests, chest protection was found to be only marginal in several scenarios, including frontal offset, full-width frontal, and oblique pole crashes. In one test, the driver’s airbag didn’t fully stop the head from hitting the steering wheel, which led to a penalty.

In the side impact test, the driver’s pelvis protection was rated adequate, but chest protection for the 10-year-old dummy was poor. The driver’s door also came unlatched during the crash, which could put passengers at risk. ANCAP applied another penalty due to this issue.

Solid Performance in Crash Avoidance

Despite these results, the Inster showed solid performance in crash avoidance. It has standard features such as automatic emergency braking, lane keeping support, and speed sign recognition.

“The Hyundai Inster enters a highly-competitive segment, and while some may suggest safety isn’t important for the smaller end of the market, in fact the opposite is true,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer Carla Hoorweg.

“Smaller vehicles, by physical size, are at a disadvantage out on the road, so having a well-rounded level of structural safety as well as the ability to avoid a crash is critical for those looking to purchase a smaller vehicle.”

Safety Scores for Hyundai Inster:

  • Adult Occupant Protection: 70 per cent
  • Child Occupant Protection: 83 per cent
  • Vulnerable Road User Protection: 70 per cent
  • Safety Assist: 69 per cent

Hyundai released the Inster, a small electric SUV priced between $35,000 and $65,000, in May 2025. The ANCAP rating applies to all variants except the Inster Cross, which has not yet been tested. Standard safety features include dual frontal, side chest, side head, and centre airbags.
