With fuel prices remaining high, managing fuel consumption is more important than ever. While drivers can’t control the price at the bowser, the way a vehicle is driven and maintained can make a meaningful difference to fuel use and operating costs.
Maintain correct tyre pressures.
Under‑inflated tyres increase rolling resistance and can raise fuel consumption by around 2 per cent, while also reducing tyre life. Always check the tyre placard on the vehicle (usually on the driver’s door sill) and inflate tyres to the recommended pressure for the load being carried. Don’t forget the spare tyre. Regular wheel alignment is also important, as poor alignment causes tyres to drag and increases fuel use.
Remove unnecessary weight and drag.
Extra weight forces the engine to work harder, particularly in stop‑start driving. Remove unused tools, equipment, or cargo from the vehicle whenever possible. Studies show that carrying maximum load can increase fuel consumption by up to 24 per cent. Roof racks and bull bars also add weight and aerodynamic drag. If roof racks aren’t being used, remove them to reduce fuel consumption by up to five per cent.
Keep vehicles well serviced.
Regular servicing helps engines run efficiently. Blocked air filters, worn components, or dirty injectors can significantly increase fuel use. Well‑maintained vehicles consume less fuel and are more reliable.
Drive at efficient speeds.
Higher speeds increase wind resistance and fuel consumption. In many vehicles, cruising at moderate highway speeds is more fuel‑efficient than driving faster. Drivers should balance fuel efficiency with journey time while always observing speed limits.
Drive smoothly and plan ahead.
Smooth acceleration, gentle braking, and maintaining steady speeds can significantly improve fuel economy. Looking ahead, avoiding harsh driving, and choosing routes with free‑flowing traffic all help reduce fuel use.
Use air conditioning wisely.
Air conditioning increases engine load. At lower speeds, opening windows can be more fuel‑efficient, while at highway speeds it’s often better to use the air conditioning to avoid aerodynamic drag.
