The GWM Cannon Alpha has achieved a five-star ANCAP safety rating. This is the first hybrid utility vehicle assessed by ANCAP with high scores across key safety categories. This rating applies to both the 2.0-litre petrol hybrid and 2.4-litre diesel variants.
It earned an 84 per cent score for Adult Occupant Protection and 93 per cent for Child Occupant Protection. It also scored 82 per cent for Vulnerable Road User Protection and 81 per cent for Safety Assist.
Notably, the vehicle earned full points in frontal and side-impact tests involving child dummies, reflecting strong protection standards for young passengers.
“GWM and its vehicle designs have improved markedly over the past decade, and this five-star result for the Cannon Alpha is evidence of this,” said Ms. Hoorweg.
In crash tests, the Cannon Alpha provided strong occupant protection, scoring maximum points in side impact and frontal offset tests. However, as a large utility vehicle, it received a vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility penalty due to the increased risk to smaller vehicles in frontal impacts.
Advanced Safety Features
The Cannon Alpha’s advanced safety features include Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and a lane support system. All models come standard with lane-keeping assist and lane departure warnings. The AEB system offers broad collision avoidance support, covering scenarios like Car-to-Car, Vulnerable Road User, Junction, Backover, and Head-On.
Its child protection features are particularly noteworthy. The child detection system alerts drivers if a child is left inside the vehicle. This helped it earn full points in ANCAP’s Child Occupant Protection category.
“This rating marks a significant step for the popular Utility segment with the GWM Cannon Alpha being the first hybrid Ute to achieve a five-star ANCAP safety rating,” added Ms. Hoorweg.
