The GAC Group, otherwise known as Guangzhou Automobile Co., Ltd., began operations at a new assembly plant in Jakarta, Indonesia last 20 June. Additionally, the group also established its official sales outlet and a battery service centre in Thailand.
PRODUCTION IN JAKARTA
Named the “GAC Indonesia Smart Factory,” the facility has a production capacity of 20,000 units per year. The auto group announced that its production capacity could increase to 50,000 units per year, depending on demand.
The new plant is expected to produce various NEVs and hybrids, such as the Aion V, Aion Y Plus, and Hyptec HT models. Thanks to the facility, GAC will no longer need to import these EVs from China. Instead, they will be now sourced locally from the new plant.
According to the GAC Group, the plant would not have been possible without the investment of the Indomobil Group. Significantly, the Indomobil Group is the country’s largest automotive distributor. GAC reiterated at the plant’s inauguration ceremony that it has “come to Indonesia, for Indonesia.” The vehicle maker’s foray into Indonesia is part of an EV-centric strategy called “One GAC 2.0.”
“Indonesia is a key market in GAC’s global expansion and is at the forefront of our overseas development strategy. With the inauguration of PT National Assemblers’ assembly plant, we want to strengthen our contribution to economic growth, industrial quality improvement, and sustainable mobility transformation in Indonesia.” said Wei Haigang, the group’s International President.
SALES IN THAILAND
Presently in Thailand, GAC launched a battery service centre in addition to a sales outlet. While the sales outlet is solely under GAC, the battery service centre was launched in partnership with UPower Energy. Similarly, the launch of both are also part of the One GAC 2.0 initiative.
The new battery service centre is self-operated and UPower Energy’s first one overseas. Moreover, the centre not only offers multi-level repair and diagnostic services for batteries but is also the first to receive a license from Thailand’s Board of Investment (BOI). With the addition of this license, UPower Energy is the only company in Thailand’s EV industry to receive 3 licenses from the BOI.
The facility is placed near GAC’s sales outlet, making a convenient experience for customers with support for a full life-cycle service for their products. Currently, it joins UPower Energy’s current network of 27 charging stations, set to become 200 by the year 2027.
