A new website and mapping tool from the federal government aims to speed up the rollout of electric vehicle (EV) chargers across Australia. The Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI) Mapping Tool, now live on ev.gov.au, helps network providers and planners find the best places to install fast chargers. It also offers everyday drivers a central place for reliable EV advice.
The mapping tool uses data such as traffic volumes, EV uptake, electricity grid strength, mobile coverage, and nearby services like toilets and shops. This information helps identify high-demand areas and supports better planning and investment in charging stations.
Federal Climate and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said the new tool will make it easier for drivers to keep moving without worry.
“We are making sure that EV chargers are in the right place – so drivers can be on the move, hassle free. Our new mapping tool will pinpoint where fast chargers are most needed, driving smarter investment and better planning,” he said.
Support for Increasing EV Uptake
Australia now has more than 300,000 EVs on the road, with EVs making up 15 per cent of new car sales, including plug-in hybrids. Mr Bowen said the country is moving quickly towards cleaner transport.
“There’s much more to do, but these tools are part of how we work together with states and industry to get on with the job. Australia is powering ahead on cleaner, cheaper transport.”
The government believes better access to charging infrastructure, particularly in regional areas, will help boost consumer confidence and drive even faster EV adoption. Industry groups like the Electric Vehicle Council have also pointed to lower running costs, improving model variety, and growing environmental awareness as key reasons behind the surge in EV sales.
At the same time, several state governments have maintained EV incentives, including stamp duty exemptions, purchase rebates, and access to transit lanes, which continue to encourage uptake.
These combined efforts form part of the broader National Electric Vehicle Strategy launched in 2023 to decarbonise transport and reduce vehicle emissions, which currently make up around 10 per cent of Australia’s total emissions.
Central Hub for EV Info
The ev.gov.au website also acts as a one-stop shop for EV buyers and owners. It includes advice on choosing and maintaining an EV, charging at home or on the road, installing chargers in homes and apartments, and finding help through government programs. It also links to trusted resources from government, industry, and universities.
The site gives drivers the facts they need to understand EV options, plan longer trips, and get the most out of their vehicles. The government plans to keep updating the site in the coming months to make it even more useful for drivers and the EV industry.
