The latest round of safety ratings from ANCAP Safety has delivered five-star results for several new electric vehicles, including the battery-electric Toyota Hilux, Subaru Trailseeker, and Subaru Uncharted.
The June safety update also saw the BMW 1 Series and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé receive four-star ratings after mixed frontal crash test results.
ANCAP confirmed the battery-electric Toyota Hilux achieved the same top safety rating as the diesel-powered variants after undergoing additional crash testing focused on battery protection and high-voltage system integrity.
“In an increasing market of alternative-powered utes, business and private buyers now have another option that balances their safety needs with their powertrain considerations,” ANCAP Chief Executive Officer Carla Hoorweg said.
Toyota Hilux BEV gains five-star rating
The battery-electric Hilux underwent additional frontal offset and oblique pole crash testing to assess battery safety performance in severe impacts. ANCAP said the testing confirmed the electric variants delivered safety performance comparable to the diesel models.
The five-star rating now applies to all Toyota Hilux variants excluding the Rugged X. Standard safety equipment includes dual frontal airbags, side chest-protecting airbags, side head-protecting airbags, a driver knee airbag and a centre airbag.
Driver assistance systems include autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, emergency lane keeping and speed sign recognition technology.

Subaru electric SUVs also achieve top ratings
The all-new Subaru Trailseeker and Subaru Uncharted also received five-star ANCAP ratings.
ANCAP said the ratings were based largely on testing from closely related Toyota electric vehicle platforms, alongside additional crash assessments and technical validation.
“The addition of the Trailseeker and Uncharted to Subaru’s growing electric portfolio sees yet more safe choices for consumers,” Hoorweg said.
Both Subaru models come equipped with dual frontal airbags, side chest-protecting airbags, side head-protecting airbags, a driver knee airbag and a centre airbag. Standard active safety systems include autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, emergency lane keeping and speed assist systems.

BMW models fall short of five stars
The BMW 1 Series and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé both received four-star ANCAP ratings despite performing strongly in crash avoidance testing.
ANCAP said the overall ratings were reduced by mixed results in frontal crash testing, including elevated chest injury risk for occupants in some scenarios.
Both vehicles recorded Adult Occupant Protection scores of 78 per cent, narrowly below the 80 per cent threshold required for a five-star rating.
Standard safety equipment across both BMW models includes dual frontal airbags, side chest-protecting airbags, side head-protecting airbags and a centre airbag. The vehicles also feature autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, emergency lane keeping and speed sign recognition systems.
