The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has launched a road safety campaign targeting young drivers called Don’t #uck! With A Truck.
The provocative campaign aims to educate young drivers on the rules and precautions when sharing the road with trucks – teaching them the appropriate driver behaviour when trucks are turning, stopping, and overtaking a truck.
Through interviews, the NHVR found that young drivers aged between 16 and 25 are lacking in education, understanding, awareness or knowledge on how to share the road safely with trucks.
“Less than half of the respondents surveyed (45%) knew to keep one lane either side of a truck free when it is turning. Young drivers are also at a higher risk of being impacted by a road accident resulting in injury or death involving a heavy vehicle.
The results and road trauma statistics painted a grim picture, and it became clear that more education to our youngest drivers was critical in not only keeping them safe on our roads, but everyone else,” reads the NHVR website.
