Chery’s iCAUR V23 has achieved a 5-star safety rating from the New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP).
General overview
After achieving a 5-star rating for its OMODA 5 model, Chinese automaker Chery submitted its new crossover SUV model to ASEAN NCAP for a safety assessment. The Chery iCAUR V23 is a compact full electric vehicle (EV) that boasts a “retro classic” design with “modern electric performance.”
The iCAUR V23 was assessed using the ASEAN NCAP 2021-2025 assessment protocol. Under this protocol, there are four categories that amount to 100 points in total. The model’s score breakdown is as follows:
- Adult Occupant Protection (AOP): 39.71/40.00
- Child Occupant Protection (COP): 16.67/20.00
- Safety Assist (SA): 17.14/20.00
- Motorcyclist Safety (MS): 17.50/20.00
Total score: 91.02/100.00 (5 stars)
The tested model was manufactured in China and will be sold to Chery’s Southeast Asian market that includes Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its Malaysian-built variant will also be sold to the same markets but was not used for the safety assessment.
Score breakdown
Adult Occupant Protection (AOP)
The vehicle underwent a crash test to determine its AOP and COP scores. Under the AOP category, the iCAUR V23 delivered a performance with a near-perfect weighted score of 39.71 per cent.
The crash test dummies placed in the car’s front compartment received good protection on majority of its critical areas. The dummy in the driver’s seat received good overall protection, while the passenger dummy was well-protected in all areas except the chest which only received adequate protection.
The side impact test produced similar results, with the driver dummy receiving good protection in all areas.
The iCAUR V23 is equipped with airbags for the driver and passenger. Its sides and curtains come with 2 airbags each. These airbags are installed as standard on all variants.
All variants of the iCAUR V23 have retractor pre-tensioners load limiters for the driver and passenger seatbelts.
Child Occupant Protection (COP)
For the COP category, the iCAUR V23 scored 16.67 points out of 20.00 points. ASEAN NCAP tested eight child seat models in all passenger seats. Only the Joie Stages (both rear-facing and forward-facing) and Joie Every Stage Fx (rear-facing) passed the installation in the front passenger seat. Almost all models passed the installation test for the left and right second-row passenger seats, except for the Combi Buon Junior Air.
Safety Assist (SA)
The iCAUR V23 is equipped with almost all of ASEAN NCAP’s recommended Advance Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). These include anti-lock braking, electronic stability control, seatbelt reminders for the driver and front passenger, autonomous emergency braking (city and inter-urban), lane departure warning system, forward collision warning system, and lane keep assist.
Upon testing the vehicle’s autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system, the iCAUR V23 successfully performed emergency brakes at various speeds. The ASEAN NCAP confirmed that the iCAUR V23’s AEB functioned according to its standards.
Motorcyclist Safety (MS)
Among the ASEAN NCAP’s recommended MS features, the iCAUR V23 lacks only advanced rear visualisation. It is equipped with blind spot detection (nearside and offside), auto high beam headlights, pedestrian protection, and AEB for motorcycles.
The ASEAN NCAP assessed the vehicle’s blind spot detection feature based on its 2021-2025 protocol, which tests both sides of the vehicle. The organisation confirmed that the feature functioned according to its criteria for both sides.
