Chinese automaker BYD recalled over 215,000 vehicles in China and Australia over brake pedal and spare wheel tray defects.

Brake pedal defects in China

BYD’s brake pedal recall covers 183,211 Qin and Tang series vehicles, specifically those manufactured between 2014 and 2022. Most of the affected vehicles were from the Tang series, while 40,316 were Qin-series vehicles. According to China’s market regulator, the affected batch of vehicles are equipped with brake pedal stopper pads from batches with material abnormalities.

These faulty stopper pads may crack or detach over time if not replaced. Furthermore, the defect may even cause the vehicle’s brake lights to turn on without prompting. This may cause other motorists to misunderstand the car’s signals while on the road.

As part of its recall, BYD announced that it will replace the affected brake pedal stopper pads with improved parts free of charge.

Spare wheel tray defects in Australia

In addition to its major recall in its domestic market, BYD will also recall 32,000 Shark 6 vehicles for faulty installation of its spare wheel tray in Australia. This recall applies to BYD Shark 6 models across all variants manufactured between August 2024 and June 2026. The company announced the defect through the following statement:

“For involved vehicles, BYD has identified that in certain circumstances, incorrect installation of the spare wheel, incorrect positioning of the spare wheel tray or insufficient fastening torque may cause abnormal wear of the spare wheel support cable.”

According to the brand, “continued movement and friction” may cause the cable to break and the spare wheel to detach. Affected vehicles will have the spare wheel lifter assembly replaced with an updated design free of charge.

Owners can check their VIN and contact their preferred BYD dealer to arrange the repair if their vehicle is affected.
