Last 12 February, BMW issued a global recall of 575,000 vehicles for fire risk issues with these models’ start motors.

STARTER MOTOR RISK

The German automaker issued its latest global recall after conducting internal investigations and receiving customer complaints. Several models that were manufactured between July 2020 and July 2022 were built with faulty starter relays.

The problem stems from metal abrasions in the starter. After a high number of cycles, the metal can cause the magnetic switch to short-circuit potentially leading to hard engine starts, engine failure, overheating, or even  fire, including while driving.

AFFECTED MODELS

The recall covers the following models:

  • 2 Series Coupé (G42)
  • 3 Series Sedan (G20)
  • 3 Series Touring (G21)
  • 3 Series China-long wheelbase version (G28)
  • 4 Series Convertible (G22)
  • 4 Series Gran Coupé (G26)
  • 5 Series Sedan (G30)
  • 5 Series Touring (G31)
  • 6 Series Gran Turismo (G32)
  • 7 Series Sedan (G11, G12)
  • X3 (G01)
  • X4 (G02)
  • X5 (G05)
  • X6 (G06)
  • Z4 (G29)

BMW advised affected owners to contact their dealers immediately. Dealers will replace the starter motor, and in some cases the battery, depending on the issue.

For those who have not yet taken their vehicles in, BMW warned against leaving the car running and unattended. Owners who notice startup problems should check their vehicle identification number in BMW’s recall lookup immediately.

So far, there has not been announcement for affected BMW vehicles in Australia. In Southeast Asia, BMW announced the recall of 2,303 vehicles in Singapore.
