The Vietnamese government will require electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to support compatible EVs from different brands.

Share charging for compatible EVs

From 1 July 2027, Vietnam will require all EV charging stations across the country to support compatible EVs from different brands. The requirements were issued under Circular 61/2026/TT-BCT, which introduces national technical regulation QCVN 32:2026/BCT.

The requirements focus on technical compatibility rather than universal compatibility. Operators are not required to cater to every EVs from all manufacturers.

The circular sets out the following requirements:

  • Connectors, charging modes, and other technical specifications must support technically compatible vehicles
  • Control systems cannot restrict or block charging for vehicle configurations publicly declared compatible
  • Commercial stations must display the charging price, electricity consumed, charging time duration and method, total amount payable, and billing method
  • Operators must keep records of operations, incidents, payments, metering and customer feedback
  • These records must be stored securely and remain retrievable
  • Stations must be equipped with safety features such as automatic warning and power shut-off systems in response to fires, floods, and overheating

The new charging regulation applies to charging stations in public areas, parking facilities, rest stops, outdoor stations, and standalone stations. It does not apply to private charging stations, ports in enclosed facilities, or basements. Developers with enclosed parking spaces are advised to contact the Ministry to check if their facilities will be exempt.

Lastly, the Ministry’s required labels must be placed on locally manufactured or assembled charging poles and imported equipment. They must also be tested and verified before being used for operation.

The current ecosystem

In Vietnam, EV charging stations are usually owned or operated by automotive OEMs, distributors, or independent companies. The largest charging infrastructure in the country is V-Green, owned by top-selling local brand and EV maker VinFast. V-Green operates more than 150,000 charging points across Vietnam, soon expanding to 500,000 ports within the next few years.

Several EV charging brands such as EV One, Evercharge, Charge+ and more have established themselves in Vietnam. These independent companies aim to provide charging services that can be compatible with varying EV models.
