Vietnam’s auto market grows again for the fifth consecutive month this year. In May 2025, vehicle sales grew 13.2 per cent year-on-year with 29,210 units sold. This figure includes only sales from Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) members, excluding VinFast, Tesla, Nissan, Hyundai, and various Chinese brands.
Unlike its Southeast Asian neighbours, car sales are dominated by a single local manufacturer, VinFast. The Vietnamese auto maker has posted strong sales since the December 2024, closing out last year with the strongest performance in the market.
OVERVIEW
Overall, VAMA sales amounted to 22,658 units for the month of May—4.1 per cent up from last year. Including non-VAMA imports, overall sales equalled to 29,210 units, up 13.2 per cent YoY. Among VAMA members’ sales, completely knocked down (CKD) units comprised 13,800 units, while completely built-up (CBU) units amounted to 15,410.
Passenger vehicle sales were also up by 2 per cent YoY, amounting to 15,444 cars sold in May. Meanwhile, commercial vehicle sales accounted for 6,183 of the units sold, 10.8 per cent up YoY. Special purpose vehicle (SPV) sales dipped by 50 per cent from last year, selling only 61 units in May. Lastly, hybrid car sales accounted for only 970 units sold but were also up by 4.4 per cent YoY.
Year-to-date sales so far amount to 131,044 units sold, 21 per cent up from last year of the same period.
BRAND SALES
VinFast keeps its position as Vietnam’s best-selling car brand with 25.7 per cent market share acquired. The local manufacturer sold 11,496 units in May alone. A year-on-year comparison is not available, but majority of its sales can be traced back to the VF 5. The model has been the top-selling brand since March, with 4,232 units sold and 18,752 units sold year-to-date. The VF 3 follows behind with 3,950 units sold for May, while the VF 6 takes the no. 5 spot with 1,393 units. VinFast’s least popular is the VF 7, which comes at 13th place in Vietnam’s top 50. The VF7 sold 773 units and is a new addition to the market.
Toyota remains the dominant brand among VAMA members with 12.7 per cent market share. The company sold 5,665 units for the month of May, up 5.8 per cent YoY. Year-to-date (YTD) sales amounted to 23,061 units sold, a significant 34 per cent increase from last year. The Vios and Yaris Cross barely make the top 10, at 7th and 9th place respectively. Both models sold 1,148 and 1,073 units respectively. The Corolla Cross comes at 11th place, 13.2 per cent down from last year with only 865 units sold.
Ford is third in May car sales with 4,054 units sold. The American brand is up 12.7 per cent YoY, with 13.9 market share acquired. Majority of these units are of the Territory model, which sold 1,481 units, 174.3 per cent up from last year. The Territory was last month’s 12th best-selling car but now sits at a comfortable 3rd place after the VF3 and VF5.
Truong Hoi Group, otherwise known as Thaco, includes BMW, Kia, Mazda, and Truck. Thaco Mazda acquired 9.3 of the market with 2,726 vehicles sold, while Thaco Truck rounds out the top 5 with 1,945 units sold. Next, Thaco Kia places right after Thaco Truck with 1,861 vehicles sold, 19.6 per cent down from May last year. Finally, Thaco BMW is in the lowest position of all Thaco brands with only 166 units sold.
Mitsubishi, though it sold 2,172 units last month, is down 31.1 per cent in sales. The Japanese automaker acquired 7.4 per cent share of the market following Thaco Mazda.
Suzuki and Vinamotor dropped the most in sales YoY, with 35.3 per cent and 61.3 per cent decreases respectively. Vinamotor sold only 12 units in May, while Suzuki sold 487.
Meanwhile, Hino saw the biggest improvement in sales with 78.1 per cent increase compared to May last year. The commercial vehicle manufacturer sold 260 units in May.
