Victoria is gearing up for a major green upgrade in its public transport with a new plan to roll out 600 zero-emission electric buses by 2035. This move marks the state’s biggest push yet towards a cleaner, more sustainable transport network.

The new Metropolitan Zero Emission Bus Franchises will transform a third of Melbourne’s bus network. The plan replaces old diesel buses with state-of-the-art electric ones, helping Victoria get closer to its goal of net zero emissions by 2045.

“These new metropolitan bus contracts will significantly lower emissions across Victoria’s bus industry, which is critical to Victoria meeting our commitment of net zero emissions by 2045,” said Minister for Climate Action Lily D’Ambrosio.

Smoother, Quieter Rides Ahead

The 600 new electric buses will cover 131 public routes and over 230 school services in Melbourne. Expect smoother and quieter journeys as these buses take over from their diesel counterparts.

“We’re introducing more zero-emission buses across the state which will deliver smoother and quieter journeys for passengers and locals,” Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams said.

Boosting Local Jobs and Industry

This initiative is not just about cleaner air—it is also about boosting local jobs and industry. The contracts awarded to Victorian operators Dysons, CDC, and Kinetic will support local manufacturing and create new jobs. The investment also includes new social procurement targets, meaning more opportunities for Indigenous businesses, priority job seekers, and women.

Kinetic currently operates the Melbourne Bus Franchise. Meanwhile CDC and Dysons handle significant town and regional services.

Environmental Impact and Transition Timeline

Once fully rolled out by 2035, these buses are set to cover more than 35 million kilometres annually, reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 45,000 tonnes each year. The new electric buses will start operating once the current contracts end on 30 June 2025, maintaining all existing routes and timetables to ensure a smooth transition for commuters.

Victoria’s move to electric buses promises a greener future for the state’s transport industry. It also has the potential to boost local industry and job creation. As the rollout progresses, these new buses will be a key part of the state’s journey towards a more sustainable and climate-friendly transport network.
