Mitsubishi’s latest SUV model, the Destinator earned 5 stars from the New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP).
For this assessment, the ASEAN NCAP evaluated a variant built in and marketed for the Philippines, and Vietnam. Another variant will be sold to the same countries with the inclusion of Brunei. The Destinator earned a total weighted score of 77.27 points based on the ASEAN NCAP’s four categories. The breakdown of the overall scores is as follows:
- Adult Occupant Protection (AOP): 34.69 / 40.00 points
- Child Occupant Protection (COP): 16.54 / 20.00 points
- Safety Assist (SA): 15.02 / 20.00 points
- Motorcyclist Safety (MS): 11.02 / 20.00 points
Adult Occupant Protection (AOP)
The Destinator provided good protection for the head and lower bodies of the driver and passenger dummies. The chest area for both dummies was provided with adequate protection. The driver’s lower left leg area also received adequate protection during the crash test.
The frontal impact test showed that the SUV’s front compartment was stable during its crash test.
For the side impact test, ASEAN NCAP confirmed that the driver received good protection in all areas.
Child Occupant Protection (COP)
ASEAN NCAP tested 11 child seat models for installation. All passed the 2nd row left and right seat installation test, while only three passed the front passenger test. Only 1 model passed the 2nd row centre installation test, with 4 failing and the rest being incompatible with the Destinator.
Safety Assist (SA)
The Destinator is equipped with almost all of ASEAN NCAP’s required safety features. Anti-lock Braking System and Electronic Stability Control are standard on all variants of the Destinator. Seatbelt reminder systems are also available on all variants for the driver, front passenger, and rear passengers. Rear Seat Occupant Detection, however, is not available on any variant of the Destinator.
Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) is available as standard or optional for the Destinator for both City and Inter-Urban. Pedestrian AEB is not available. The program also evaluated the AEB system under its 2021-2025 protocol. According to the ASEAN NCAP, the AEB features “have functioned according to […] requirements.”
Advanced Safety Assist Technologies such as Lane Departure Warning Systems and Forward Collision Warning Systems are available as standard or optional. Lane Keep Assist, however, is not available on the Destinator.
Motorcyclist Safety (MS)
For the MS category, the ASEAN NCAP confirmed that the Destinator is equipped with Blind Spot Detection, Auto High Beam, and Pedestrian Protection technologies. Nearside and offside BSD and AHB are available as standard or optional, while Pedestrian Protection comes standard across all variants of the Destinator.
Advanced Rear Visualisation is not available for this model.
Upon assessment of its BSD technology, the ASEAN NCAP confirmed that this feature met its requirements under the 2017-2020 protocol.
