ANCAP Safety has released new safety ratings for three recently launched models, with the IM 6 and IM 5 both receiving five-star ratings under the latest testing protocols.

IM 6 Delivers High Crash Test Scores

The IM 6, a fully electric medium SUV positioned within MG’s premium line-up, delivered strong performance across its assessments. It recorded one of the highest frontal offset (MPDB) scores seen under current ANCAP test protocols, achieving 7.54 out of 8.00. The result reflects both high levels of occupant protection and a lower risk of causing increased harm to another vehicle in a collision.

Dual frontal, side chest-protecting, side head-protecting and a centre airbag are standard. The model is also equipped with autonomous emergency braking that can detect vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists . Lane keep assist, lane departure warning, emergency lane keeping and speed sign recognition are also included.

The IM 6 scored well across the board with the following results:

  • Adult Occupant Protection – 90%
  • Child Occupant Protection – 91%
  • Vulnerable Road User Protection – 83%
  • Safety Assist –  79%

The IM 6 first arrived in Australia in July 2025, followed by New Zealand in November 2025. The five-star rating applies to all variants.

IM 5 Shows Strong Structural Performance

The IM 5, a large battery-electric sedan, also achieved a five-star rating across all variants. Testing showed a stable passenger cell during frontal and side impact assessments, supported by effective restraint systems. Child occupant protection scored 91 percent, with good results recorded in both frontal and side crash scenarios.

Like the IM 6, the IM 5 includes a full suite of crash avoidance technologies. It demonstrated reliable performance in responding to vulnerable road users in autonomous emergency braking scenarios, including straight-line and turning situations.

The IM 5 scored well across the board with the following results:

  • Adult Occupant Protection – 89%
  • Child Occupant Protection – 91%
  • Vulnerable Road User Protection – 85%
  • Safety Assist – 79%

Both models were tested against the 2025 rating year protocols, with the five-star ratings valid until December 2031.

ANCAP Chief Executive Officer Carla Hoorweg said the results reflect strong safety engineering.

“The safety ratings for the premium IM 5 and IM 6 demonstrate MG’s ability to deliver vehicle safety at a high level. It’s encouraging to see this level of performance, and we hope to see these features carried across the broader MG range,” Ms Hoorweg said.
