Malaysia is set to pilot a large-scale AI traffic system in several locations in Damansara, Petaling Jaya. The project is done in cooperation with telecommunications carrier CelcomDigi, MyDigital Corporation, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, Digital Nasional Berhad, and the Petaling Jaya City Council.
The AI traffic system is expected to improve the flow of traffic in the areas of PJ Sentral, SS2, and the Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP) through “neural networks, advanced analytics, and CelcomDigi’s 5G connectivity.” These major roads are prone to congestion, especially during public holidays. Hence, Petaling Jaya is an appropriate testing ground for the new traffic system.
“Petaling Jaya is proud to be the first city in Malaysia to pilot this cutting-edge traffic intelligence solution,” said Mayor Mohamad Zhari Samingon. “Traffic congestion and urban mobility are long-standing challenges for our community, and this initiative gives us a new way to manage them effectively.”
CELCOMDIGI AND MALAYSIA
According to a press release, CelcomDigi, in tandem with city council systems, will “generate real-time traffic light cycles, guide urban planning, and recommend diversions during peak hours, construction or emergencies.”
This collaboration is a milestone for both CelcomDigi and Malaysia at large. For CelcomDigi, it marks an achievement as “the first telecommunications company in Malaysia to deliver large-scale traffic intelligence solutions,” while Malaysia is a step further in its Digital Economy Blueprint and National Digital Network (JENDELA) initiatives.
“This initiative is a powerful example of how industry and government can come together to solve urban challenges by leveraging technology to deliver meaningful impacts for the nation. This pilot in Petaling Jaya is a first step towards scaling intelligent traffic systems nationwide, building a digital ecosystem where AI and connectivity come together to create safer, smarter, and more efficient cities.” said CelcomDigi Acting CEO Albern Murty.
CelcomDigi’s ambitions don’t stop at Petaling Jaya. In its press release, the company revealed that it hopes to bring its “5G AI-powered solutions to major cities across Malaysia.” If the Petaling Jaya pilot is successful, we may see that Malaysia has fully digitised its traffic solutions in the near future.
