EV sales in Singapore hit a new record in August. According to Channel News Asia, August’s sales figure alone surpassed EV sales from the entirety of 2024. Sales from 2024 amounted to 7,772 new registrations, slightly less than August 2025’s 7,796 registrations.
CHINA’S EV BRANDS IN THE LEAD
The rise of EV sales in Singapore can be attributed to Chinese brands in the market, the most prominent amongst them is BYD. For the month of August alone, BYD performed best out of all auto brands (including ICE manufacturers) with 920 new vehicles registered and 19.8 per cent market share acquired. From all Chinese EV brands in Singapore, BYD makes up 70.9 per cent of this niche’s sales.
Apart from BYD, there are 15 more China-based EV makers in Singapore’s auto market. Among them are Chery, Geely, GAC, Zeekr, Great Wall, and XPeng to name a few. Year-to-date (YTD) sales from these brands amounted to 2,264 units, comparatively greater than 2024’s overall sales of 1,581 units.
LEGACY BRANDS STILL BEHIND
Overall, there are 4,650 new vehicle registrations in August, while YTD sales reached 33,233 units. These figures include both EVs and ICE vehicles. Both monthly and YTD sales are up by 17.7 per cent and 25.7 per cent respectively.
Toyota has the highest sales amongst legacy automakers with 608 new registrations in August. The Japanese brand currently holds 13.1 per cent of the market. Honda follows suit with 462 new registrations and 9.9 per cent market share acquired.
BYD’s rival Tesla lagged slightly behind Honda with 458 new registrations and 9.8 per cent market share acquired.
Luxury brands Mercedes-Benz and BMW fared less than their Japanese competitors. The former sold 450 vehicles and acquired 9.7 per cent market share, while the latter sold 397 units and acquired 8.5 per cent market share.
Hyundai is the only Korean brand to make the top 10 with 158 new vehicles registered.
Apart from BYD, M.G. is another Chinese automaker to make the top 10. The brand sold 122 vehicles in August with 2.6 per cent market share acquired.
The last two brands in the top 10 are legacy Japanese brands Mazda and Nissan. Both brands recorded 111 new registrations each with 2.4 per cent market share acquired equally.
