DongFeng’s new vehicle, the Forthing Friday, was awarded a 5-star safety rating for two of its variants by the ASEAN NCAP.

Score breakdown

The ASEAN NCAP evaluated DongFeng’s new SUV, the Forthing Friday. The Forthing Friday has two variants, the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) version and the Range Extended Electric Vehicle (REEV) version. Both were assessed under the same protocol.

Though two variants were tested, ASEAN NCAP gave the Forthing Friday one score. The model earned a total of 87.18 points, equivalent to a 5-star safety rating. The score breakdown is as follows:

  • Adult Occupant Protection (AOP): 39.78 / 40.00 points
  • Child Occupant Protection (COP): 15.26 / 20.00 points
  • Safety Assist (SA): 17.14 / 20.00 points
  • Motorcyclist Safety (MS): 15.00 / 20.00 points

The tested variant was built in China but is marketed to Southeast Asia, specifically Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.

Adult Occupant Protection (AOP)

The AOP category is assessed by a series of tests; a frontal impact test, side impact test, and a fitment rating system for evaluating head protection technology (HPT). During these tests, two crash test dummies are placed in the front compartment of the vehicle; one in the driver’s seat and another in the front passenger seat.

ASEAN NCAP found that both driver and passenger dummies received good protection in almost all areas. Only the driver’s lower right leg area received adequate protection. The side impact test revealed similar results, with the driver dummy receiving good protection in all areas.

The test also confirmed the function of the vehicle’s HPT using its Fitment Rating System (FRS).

Child Occupant Protection (COP)

ASEAN NCAP tested 8 different child seat models for compatibility in the car’s front passenger and second row seats. The test found that the Peg-Perego Primo Viaggo SL was incompatible with all of the vehicle’s seats. The Joie Stages child seat rearward-facing variant was only compatible with the second-row seats, and its forward-facing variant only passed compatibility with the front passenger seat.

The Combi Buon Junior Air was found to only be compatible with the second row left and centre seats. The remaining models were found to compatible with the second row left and right seats.

Safety Assist (SA)

The Forthing Friday is equipped with most of the ASEAN NCAP’s recommended safety features. Its safety features include:

  • Anti-lock Braking System
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Seatbelt Reminders (Driver, Passenger)
  • Autonomous Emergency Braking (City, Inter-Urban, Pedestrian)
  • Lane Departure Warning System
  • Forward Collision Warning System
  • Lane Keep Assist

All of the listed safety features are standard on all variants of the Forthing Friday.

Among the ASEAN NCAP’s recommended safety features, the model lacks only seatbelt reminders for rear passengers and Rear Seat Occupant Detection.

Motorcyclist Safety (MS)

The Forthing Friday is equipped with the following MS features:

  • Blind Spot Detection (Nearside, Offside)
  • Pedestrian Protection
  • Auto Emergency Braking for Motorcycles

The vehicle did not have Advanced Rear Visualisation or Auto High Beam.

The ASEAN NCAP also confirmed that the model’s Blind Spot Detection technology functioned according to its criteria.
