A new energy vehicle (NEV) brand from China, Firefly, officially made its debut in the Singaporean market earlier this month.
WHAT IS FIREFLY?
Firefly is the third brand under Chinese auto manufacturer Nio Inc., or NIO. NIO was established in 2014 and is known for producing electric vehicles (EVs), while the premium arm Firefly established in 2024 before officially launching in 2025.
Firefly produces smaller, premium EVs which are mostly marketed towards Europe, positioned to rival brands such as Smart and Mini. Its first model is the Firefly EV which debuted with two designs called Free and Glow, priced at RMB 119,800 (AUD 25,640) and RMB 125,800 (AUD 26,924) respectively.
THE FIREFLY EV
The Firefly EV is a compact 5-door hatchback EV and the Firefly brand’s only model so far. It features a signature biomimetic design, with three LED light circles for its headlights and rear lights. This three-ring element is referred to as a “sound-light triple concerto,” creating a distinct look for night-time driving.
One of its notable features is its ability to swap batteries instead of charging. Its parent company Nio is known for battery-swapping stations, which are set to also come to Singapore. As of January 2026, there have been no further announcements regarding the prices for the battery swapping service in Singapore.
PERFORMANCE SO FAR
In 2025, Nio announced on its social media that Firefly delivered 39,414 vehicles since its launch in April. The brand’s performance grew steadily throughout the year, with a slight dip to 2,366 deliveries in July. Its strongest month of delivery was December 2025, with 7,084 units delivered.
OVERSEAS PLANS
In 2025, Nio introduced Firefly to several European countries such as Austria, Portugal, Belgium, and Hungary with deliveries ongoing in the Netherlands and Norway. Test drives and deliveries are now ongoing in Denmark, Greece, Austria, Portugal, and Luxembourg. Future launch plans in Europe include Armenia, Bulgaria, and Cyprus.
With initial footings established in Europe, the company has turned its attention to Asia. Firefly introduced its very first right-hand drive model to Macau last year, a significant step that opened the brand to more RHD-preferred countries and has now turned its attention to Singapore. Aside from Singapore and Macau, the Firefly brand will also expand to Thailand in March. According to reports, Nio has plans to expand to Hong Kong but there is no mention of Firefly’s involvement yet.
In addition to Asia, Firefly will enter the Australian and New Zealand car markets in 2026.
