With diesel prices squeezing Australian fleet budgets, reducing consumption is essential. Geotab’s 2026 Connected Fleets in Australia report, surveying 517 fleet decision-makers, found 60% identify fuel costs as a daily challenge. Yet 44% of businesses using GPS tracking reported lower fuel consumption.
Driver behaviour matters
Speeding, harsh acceleration and sudden braking waste fuel. Telematics helps managers identify patterns and coach drivers towards smoother, safer habits. Among small fleets using GPS tracking, 27% reported improved driver safety habits.
Reduce unnecessary idling
Engines burn fuel even when vehicles are stationary. Track idle time, identify recurring hotspots and set achievable reduction targets. The report found 30% of small fleets using GPS tracking reduced idling, demonstrating the value of addressing avoidable waste.
Predictive Maintenance
Underinflated tyres, clogged filters and mechanical faults can increase fuel consumption. Regular servicing remains essential, while predictive maintenance uses diagnostic fault codes and historical vehicle data to flag emerging issues before breakdowns occur. Across surveyed businesses, 30% reported reduced vehicle maintenance costs through connected fleet management.
Assess vehicles for electrification
Not every diesel vehicle needs a like-for-like replacement. Geotab’s Electric Vehicle Suitability Assessment (EVSA) analyses real-world driving patterns, EV range, replacement options and total cost of ownership to identify suitable vehicles for electrification. The report found 55% of Australian fleets already operate EVs or hybrids.
